Glasnevin Cemetery Tour and Museum

We spent a wonderful afternoon in Glasnevin cemetery.  First we visited the Museum and learnt about the history of the graveyard, including information about the gravediggers, body snatchers and diseases.

This was followed by a Guided Tour of the cemetery, which began with a reenactment of Padraig Pearse’s oration at O’Donovan Rossa’s funeral.  From here our tour guide Bridget led us through the political history of the cemetery, starting with Roger Casement whose remains were repatriated in the 1960’s and buried in concrete to ensure that they wouldn’t be moved again, to the controversial grave of Charles Stewart Parnell in the Cholera Pit of the 1840’s and the lavish crypt of Daniel O’Connell under the massive 51 metre round tower that dominates the cemetery, to the grave of Ireland’s great hero, Michael Collins whose grave is constantly decorated with flowers to this day by visitors to the cemetery.

We also visited the graves of a number of other well renowned figures from Irish History, including James Larkin, Countess Markievicz and Eamon De Valera.  Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and we had a great time.  Just imagine, there are 1.5 milllion people buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, more than currently live in Dublin.  Gives you something to ponder on.   Highly recommended way to spend an afternoon.  Details on their website:  Glasnevin Trust

Harvest Celebration at Aideen’s Grave, Howth

All welcome to attend, pagans, those of any religion or none, just bring an attitude of gratitude and a small harvest offering.  A ceremony to give thanks and gratitude for the blessings we have received this year. Please bring an offering, something you have grown or made, or a symbol of something you are grateful for.

Following on from the fantastic celebration we had at Aideen’s Grave for Summer Solstice, I’d love you to attend a Harvest celebration in the same place on Saturday 17th August at 8 pm. I know it’s not Lughnasa, it’s the first weekend that myself and some other friends that I really would like to attend can be there. I’m hoping that we could have some music and storytelling in the Deer Park Hotel bar afterwards, with everyone participating, so if you have a drum, guitar, flute or an appropriate story to tell, please bring it with you. Some people have suggested meeting in Howth earlier in the day with children, if you decide to do that, please feel free to post suggestions and meeting up times on the Facebook event page, but I won’t be involved until the evening event. Grá agus Beannnachtaí Treasa

Aideen’s Grave is a portal tomb located in the grounds of Deer Park Hotel, Howth, Co. Dublin. There is car parking available at the hotel, and Howth DART Station is nearby. The 31 bus from Dublin city centre stops near the entrance to the grounds, from there or from the DART station it’s a beautiful walk uphill past Howth Castle. When you reach Deer Park Hotel, walk around the right hand side of the building and take the path leading towards the woods. There is a sign for the dolmen on a path leading to the right and it’s a very short walk from there.

Summer Solstice Celebration

Things are starting to take shape at this stage. We’ll be having a ceremony calling in the seven directions and honouring our celtic heritage, followed by some shamanic drumming and then Sinead Whyte will give us a sample of her Celtic Sound Healing Work. Followed by drinks in the Deer Park Hotel for anyone that wants to meet up for a chat. If you’ve any drums, rattles etc you’re very welcome to bring them along. 🙂

You can find out more about our Solstice Celebration here.

National Walk in the Woods Day Sunday 9th June

Don’t forget it’s national walk in the woods day tomorrow, Sunday 9th June.  Walks have been organised for all over Ireland.  Some people are having picnics and Bards in the Woods has been arranged for some of the woods.  It should be a fabulous day out, with glorious sunny weather.  This is your opportunity to vote with your feet, to keep our forests and woods in public ownership for the benefit of our children and our children’s children.  John Willmott has been working tirelessly on organising this day, for details of what’s on where check out his FB Event.  So spread the word and let’s get as many people as possible to participate. 🙂
